President’s Report:
Let’s say a word about fashion that so shapes our lives. Fashion is for groups, Art is for persons. Groups tend towards the anonymous not the personal. Groups can be very good if they are right, but if they are wrong they can be very dangerous. Fashion today is very strong but we are formed from persons not romantic myths of mobs, so I have to put my face against fashion and be for the good of each person I meet.
The Art Centre here exhibits personal objects that ring true to other person’s fashion is really for those who wish to make money from groups, and so have some illusory power.
Your President,
Richard Cutler.
Arts Trail News
BMCAC participated for the first time in the BMAN Arts Trail on June 28 & 29. Our Centre was well attended with 80 people visiting the Centre over the weekend.Among the good news coming from the exhibition were numerous sales, possible new members and interest in classesshown by visitors, as well as an incredible gift to the potters (see potters report) building on this success was discussed.
BMCAC can look forward to building on this success to attract even more visitors and increase our profile on the local arts scene.
Potter’s Report:
Blue Mountains Potters gained an unexpected bonus from the BMAN’S arts trail. A local
member of our community who is about to relocate to Canberra, an ex-potter, visited our Centre and subsequently gave us some glazes and a pottery wheel in almost brand new condition. We thank Les Martin for his very generous gift. The Monday night group is buzzing 10 regular members, plus Helen and Wendy who help where needed.

On Saturday 12 July BMCAC held a Bunnings BBQ raising funds for our centre. The day went well with the weather playing its part and sales going very well which made the day very enjoyable for everyone involved. The pictures show BMCAC members hard at work combining efforts to make everything run smoothly. Many thanks go to all volunteers who showed up and gave their time.

May Newsletter
Editor’s Note:
In the last committee meeting there was a
discussion to modify the newsletter every
second month to a simpler format, while
retaining the usual format every other month.
This is due to the fact that a simpler format
reduces editing time considerably. I would
appreciate any feedback from members
regarding the new format. How can it be
improved? And, is this format acceptable to
the membership in general?
This newsletter is my first attempt at a new
format and I welcome any comments, good,
or indifferent to allow me to gage whether or
not I’m doing the right thing.
Regards,
Matthias
Members Exhibition:
The members exhibition was held last
weekend with the opening night kicking it off
at 7:00pm at the Glenbrook Community Hall.
Below are photos taken during the opening of
the exhibition.

The Hall looked a treat and it was a great
opportunity to mix and mingle with local
artists and art lovers.
In the next newsletter we will have some
more photos of exhibits and exhibitors and
will have information and a preview of the
upcoming life-drawing exhibition.
This will be another highlight on the BMCAC
calendar for 2014.
Other news is that we will be participating in
the Blue Mountains Arts trail with more detail
being provided in the next issue.
If you are interested in participating in a group
exhibition in a prime location please contact

Presentation by Joy Myers
Creed at Nepean Art Society
In other news, one of our more established
members gave a presentation on acrylics
and collage art at the Nepean Art Society.
Joy presented techniques on her acrylic and
collage art.
Her presentation was well received which
for anyone familiar with her work is easy to
understand. Joy also had several works at
our members exhibition which were of
exceptional quality and I for one would love
to pick up some of her little tricks and
techniques to improve my own work.
Come to our next Committee
Meeting
The next committee meeting will be on
Thursday 1 May at 7:30 pm. All members are
encouraged to attend with all contributions
always being welcome.

Body and Soul Exhibition
The Body and Soul Life Drawing and Painting Exhibition will be held on the weekend of 20, 21 and 22 September.
Overall, we are expecting another wonderful exhibition but need the support of more of our members. Please think about how you can assist and contact Joy or Richard in advance. The more helpers we have the better and it would be good to see some new faces. Looking forward to seeing your work and sharing this creative experience.
Please note, that on Friday September 20, there will still be a drawing session starting at 11:00 am and finishing at 1:30 pm.
If you are attending the opening night, please bring some fingerfood along. Wine and soft drink will be provided.
Additional information and the entry form are provided with this edition of Creations.
Annual Members’ Exhibition
The exhibition was held over the last weekend in July. The opening on the Friday night was well attended with plenty to savour in the way of food as well as for the eye.
Children’s Pottery Display at Penrith Library
Some of the pottery work that has been created by children in the pottery classes is on display in the Penrith Library along with a pottery display (see Events of Interest).
Members who might not have had the chance to admire their work at the Annual Members’ Exhibition have an opportunity to make up for it there.
Potters’ Exhibition:
The potters’ Exhibition will take place on the weekend of 12 & 13 October. Potters are to remember the 6 donation bowls.
Instructions for exhibitors will be sent out prior to the event.
President’s Report:
There is a saying famous in the Art World by Oscar Wilde – “Necessities we can do without, but luxuries are indispensable”. At first hearing we may think this flippant in our society. St Teresa of Avila said “I do not think I could live without poetry”. She may exist without it, but not really live without it. She needed the human word. We say communication and indeed celebration of our feelings, thoughts and beliefs are what makes us particularly human.
We humans drew on cave walls before we had plumbing and roads. Woman wore jewellery before they had a house, and decoration on pottery is basic to the pot itself.
Our Centre stands for passion – which means a lasting feeling that life is worthwhile. So we can say “necessities we can do without – as long as we can exist, and luxuries seen in their true perspective are indispensable to being human.
Richard
Life Drawing Monthly Report
Our Annual Exhibition plans are moving ahead and it seems that our attendance numbers are up, so that means everyone is keener to do work.
This is the last “Creations” till after our Life Drawing Exhibition. If there is any information you need to know about that exhibition please phone me on (02) 4739 2413
There was very little interest shown in continuing with the printmaking group and so our next meeting will be the last unless
interest is shown. That is on Sunday 25 August at 1:30 pm.
Editor’s Note:
Dear members, this year, I enjoyed for the first time being a participant in the annual exhibition and it gave me great pleasure and pride to have my daughter also have some of her newly-created pottery on display.
There is nothing that makes people appreciate each other more than doing things together and that is true also for all the members who joined in making the exhibition happen.
I enjoyed meeting new faces especially on opening night and while I can’t be there myself, I encourage every member to make an effort to make it to the Life Drawing Exhibition to mix, mingle and ensure that our Centre continues to bring people together in art.
Community Grant for BMCAC
Some excellent news for our Centre has been received. We have been successful in obtaining a community grant from the Blue Mountains City Council.
The grant is generously sponsored by the Glenbrook Panthers Bowling Club.
The presentation of the grant will take place on Tuesday 13 of August at 10:30 am at the Katoomba RSL, 86 Lurline Street. The General Manager of Glenbrook Panthers Bowling Club will present the grant to our president Richard Cutler who will be in attendance. All other members are encouraged to attend if they are able to in order to show our appreciation to both, the Blue Mountains Council and to the generous sponsors.
A New Life Member in BMCAC
The significant contribution to our Centre by one of our long term members has been acknowledged through the granting of Life Membership for Daphne Pullen (centre of picture).
Daphne has been a member of the Centre for over 30 years.
During her time at BMCAC she has been an integral part of the fibre group which was better known as the “Rusty Pins”.
The fibre group was a fundamental part of the Centre for over 40 years and though the group is currently not active, when viewing the history of our Centre, the fibre group’s contribution to the Centre was such that it is hard to imagine how the centre would have thrived to the same extend as it has.
Apart from being a member of the fibre group, Daphne was also a very active member of our Centre in general being always at hand when required for gallery duties, enrolment days, garage sale days and other duties.
She has been an invaluable part of our Centre over a very long period of time and it was with great gratitude from the part of the committee and all members in general, that she was presented with her Life Membership as a token of our appreciation for her longstanding contribution to the Centre.
All of us are looking forward to keeping Daphne in our midst in the years to come.
Sydney Moderns art for a new world (NSW Art Gallery)
Featuring works by Margaret Preston, Roy de Maistre, Grace Cossington Smith, Ralph Balson and Harold Cazneaux among many others, this exhibition is a celebration of modern Sydney art & life. On display until October 7.
Events of Interest:
Glenbrook Market Stalls:
On third Saturday each month.
Mosaic Workshop by Marion Shapiro
There will be a Mosaic Workshop held on the weekend of 12-13 October. The cost of the two day workshop will be $120 and there will be an additional $25 charge for materials with everything needed for the workshop being provided.
The example shown in the picture was displayed at the annual members’ exhibition.
Pottery Exhibition at Penrith Library
Along with the exhibition of the children’s pottery, Carolyne Eadie also has a display at the Penrith Library.
The theme of the display is Nursery Rhymes Myths & Legends and draws on the symbolism found in traditional folklore giving them new life through reinterpretation.

President’s Report:
Once
alive our really big problem is what to do about death and what comes after it,
so we have religion, it basically tells us how to get to Heaven. But the rest
of life is lived, I believe, artistically. Thinking of the full gamut of the
Arts of Man, communication, the art of understanding and controlling aspects of
Nature, the art of motherhood (intuiting what the child needs next) etc. On the
other hand we are extremely dependent beings for our air, water, food, culture
etc. When we put our inner psychology and place the position of freedom and
love into the mix, we see what complicated beings we are. This is where I
believe self-expression comes to the fore as glue or grease between these
blocks. It gives comfort to make, as we and all things we see around us, have
been made. I have said in our life drawing class – if God had made a flat woman
in paint, is that what she would have looked like?
So, as president of this centre I congratulate Cody for
taking over our Gallery and paying rent in order to make, and let’s all produce
abundantly for our annual Exhibitions and more.

Life Drawing Monthly Report
Our
group is beginning to focus on plans for the “Annual Life Drawing Exhibition”
which is at the Community Hall, Glenbrook, next to the picture theatre on 20-22
Sept.
We plan
to work with one another encouraging and enabling each other to reach toward
their potential. Hopefully each drawer will gain insight into how others see
their work progressing. This process could help each of us articulate and focus
on our direction or aim. This will only work if individuals present samples of
their work. With this concept in mind we will stay back after life drawing
finishes (perhaps bring your lunch) beginning on the 17th May and discuss how often thereafter.
This is
purely voluntary and no one ought to feel pressured to participate.
Please
feel free to give me your thoughts about this.

Class Co-ordinator’s Report:
Helen,
Vicki and I interviewed prospective children’s class teachers and would like to
welcome Abby Howells and Cathie Cox to the centre. Abbey Howells is offering classes in Art Fun and Craft fun
for the younger children, and Cathie Cox is offering Mixed Media and Drawing
for the older children. Hopefully we can run all our newly-offered children’s
classes. Details of the classes
are on a new page on the website called “Class and Teacher Information”. All the class outlines sound really
exciting.
Also, hopefully,
Paul Sargeant’s photography class will find the students to get it going as
well. Enrolment day is Saturday 4
May.

Exploring Majolica Technique - Mary Greig
I’ve recently been experimenting with
translating my drawings onto ceramic tiles using the majolica technique. The
direct nature of applying colour
through this brush technique has a nice appeal because the fired result looks
pretty close to way it was applied.
In an effort to make ceramic tiles that can be used in
a garden wall project I’ve
been experimenting with majolica
as a way to explore what the character and colour palette of this technique has to offer.
For the type of imagery I’m trying to
achieve, I’ve found that simple, refined forms with smooth surfaces are best. But
thinking outside of the box might lead you beyond the conventional
interpretation of this technique.
Consider the variety of textures you
can create, combined with alternatives to applying stains using non-traditional
techniques. Spattering with a toothbrush, spraying with a squirt bottle, or
dabbing with a crumpled rag might be just the beginning.
The example shown on the previous
page is of a figure drawing that was transferred to majolica. Icarus from the Ovid collection of Greek
myths - Metamorphoses.
The majolica technique begins with
applying an opaque white glaze over your bisque-fired clay.
I would enjoy conducting a workshop
in this interesting and colourful technique and would like to hear from anyone
interested in participating.

Publicity Report:
Liz submitted an article to the paper on Paul
Sargeant’s photography class.
She is intending to submit an article to advertise the
new teachers and the new art classes. She will also write an article and submit
it before our members’ exhibition.
Liz Bryden
Joy Myers-Creed, Ingrid Russell
and Liz Bryden attended a Solar Etching Workshop at Springwood High School over
the weekend 13/14 April
2013, organised by the Australian Forum for Textile Arts (TAFTA). Seraphina Martin who you may know
through her printmaker activities in the Blue Mountains and beyond was a
wonderful tutor, offering her expertise and encouragement throughout.
For those of you who don’t know what solar
etching is, it is a non-
toxic and relatively easy method of print making which involves exposing the
metal plate to the sun to achieve a print. As it was a very sunny weekend this was no problem and we
had a wonderful time exploring the effects that can be achieved using original drawings,
photos and found objects as the basis for the etchings.
Solar etching is only one of the
workshops offered by TAFTA and if you are interested please refer to their
website http://tafta.org.au/ for more
information.

President’s Report:
In my overview of the year I want to bring up certain distinctions that might make things clear. The first distinction is between a manager and an artist. This came up when one of our committee members left with letters to us all complaining I was not computer savvy and basically not a good manager.
Managers usually don’t want to live with the uncertainty principal that is inherent in art.
If you are going to go for originality for you, then to make breakthroughs, one must accept a fair amount of freedom and uncertainty. This is the difference in attitude between an artist and a manager I believe.
Now I don’t know what sort of president you want – one whose main thrust is seeing or one whose main thrust in managing.
I am not really a good manger. I like people too much. Managers stick to their rules and often sacrifice people. I have experienced the difference between craft and an Art. I was a tailor for 25 years in a family firm lasting 130 years from father to son. We made $6,000 suits. The difference I believe is that craft is usable. It has much more management in it. One can guarantee the product more because of the rules, like commercial Art. But real Art is found on the wing so to speak, one sees it is good, the rules are found for that particular painting only – maybe some of you have witnessed this when I draw portraits of the people at the Rotary Markets. Now both are good - craft and Art, but they are different and in a place like this each should have their own dignity. The line between craft and Art can be hazy, but essentially they are different and this should be recognised openly. So much for that.
Now to other matters: We have had two major deaths in our family. One Lyndal Walsh to cancer– what a dynamo! Everyone who knew her will miss her terribly. The other, our guardian angel who lived directly over the road and oversaw the centre intimately.
Highlights of this last year: Our wonderful pottery exhibitions and our much talked about life drawing exhibition. To get regional councillors and politicians to open these are a bonus, as Wendy can witness, as she approached them with our immediate concerns.
Our main room has been beautifully painted. We had 30 school children do the first coat and Wendy with Helen’s support did a great job completing the task.
I thank David for such sterling work organising the Rotary market stall. This advertises our centre. Also, I would like to thank him for his great contribution as Vice Treasurer working with Ned. Ned wishes to step down after 9 productive years. We wish Jan well too with all her health troubles - and thank her for Oh! so many years –it is hard for a newcomer to imagine it.
There are many many more of you who do great work for the good of the centre- thank you one and all.
Some problems, like what to do with the Gallery, will come up with the new committee, but I step down with a light heart to await your decision as to our next committee’s make up.

It should be noted the Auditor’s comments based on the last 7 years results were:
Based on the average loss, in 6 to 6.5 years the Centre will be broke.
Over the last 3 to 4 years, this has been brought to the Committee’s attention. The result for 2012 is very good, i.e. $1,998.15 deficit. Take out the non cash item of depreciation $1,648.17 and the result is $346.98 cash deficit for the year.

Gallery Report:
We began the year with a new roster and timetable in place i.e. opening only on a Saturday from 9:30am until 4:30pm with people rostered on, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon. I hoped that the new opening times would boost sales. It was not to be, our sales remained low.
With declining exhibitors, members were rostered on more frequently. Many found it disheartening to sit for three and a half hours and have few or as was sometimes the case, no customers at all. The inevitable happened and we were all very sorry to have to make the decision to close the gallery in its present form, in December.
Exhibitors were requested to remove any stock they wished to retain. Anything left behind was offered for sale at discount prices along with remaining goods from our April garage sale. A profit of about $200 was put into the BMCAC account.
I have enjoyed being a member of the Blue Mountains Creative Centre having experienced it under various hats over the last ten years and would like to thank the committee, the members and especially the gallery committee for their continued support. I will especially miss the friendship of the potters group and my long standing involvement as the gallery co-ordinator, but personal circumstances demand that I resign. I wish you all the best for the future.
Jan Needham
Life Drawing Monthly Report
Our group has started well this year and we all look forward to the time ahead. Members reported how much they missed the activity and thought that the break was a bit long. There were others who enjoyed the break and I was one of them.
I’ve had some enquiries from interested people wanting to draw who have seen us on our web page. I’ve also had 2 new models wanting work, phone up and give me their phone numbers.
Our numbers fluctuate widely, there was 5 one week and then 11 the following week. Sometimes after a full week people stay away thinking the space is too restricted and so for a few weeks after that the numbers are down. I’m mentioning this here so that some will understand the problem and it may not happen as often.
It’s encouraging to see the drawing group has 4 members taking an active role in helping to run the art center. Richard Cutler is the President, Liz Bryden and Colin Brest are on the committee and I am the life drawing facilitator. The Art Centre needs more active members. Please consider volunteering.
We need additional committed people who could attend monthly meetings on the first Thursday of the month. We would welcome new input and support. So come along to our next meeting on April 4th at 7:30pm and see how things work.

Potters Group Report:
Blue Mountains Potters once again had a very successful year in 2013. Our membership has increased considerably and our new members are very keen. Many of these new members come from the Monday night group who meet weekly at 6-30pm.
We had an enjoyable and informative sawdust firing at Wendy’s in September where results were both interesting and surprising! Many of these pots then became part of the annual Clay Creations exhibition held in October in the Glenbrook Hall, an event which draws plenty of visitors and lots of positive praise.
Our Christmas party was once again held at the Lapstone Hotel (on a quieter night!) and was a very enjoyable evening. We again collected a large box of “goodies” for the Lower Blue Mountains Family Support service, which distributes Christmas hampers to needy families.
With the Centre’s classes growing ---a big thank you to Carolyn Eadie---we welcome prospective members to join our group.
Wendy Field
Library Report:
During to the room rearrangement a number of pottery library books were culled and books rearranged.
Vicki Hersey
Life drawers Group Report:
The Life Drawing Group has had a successful year with an amazing Annual Exhibition at the local community hall beside the picture theatre.
We have, as usual, continued meeting with unbroken sessions except for our so called Christmas break. We continue to welcome new members and new models on a regular basis, so we are indeed a dynamic group, but retaining a nucleus of steadfast dedicated drawers.
Our Christmas get together was very well attended. It was a festive last meet together.
It is a rewarding task for me to continue to facilitate this family of drawers who openly welcome new people of any persuasion with enthusiasm and warmth.
Joy
Class co-ordinator’s Report:
A warm welcome to all new and returning students to BMCAC. Hopefully we can keep the classes going all year, so please spread the word or bring a friend or two. All the pottery classes, both for adults and children, are full and a new class on Friday evening has had to be formed. Thank you to Carolyn for all her efforts last year and we look forward to another busy pottery studio this year. The children’s painting class on Thursday afternoon went ahead. Unfortunately Hilary will be finishing up at the end of this term and we thank her for her time with us. We will need a new teacher for the children’s classes in art, so if anyone is interested in applying for that position, please email me at bmcac.mail@gmail.com or ring me on 47391118.
Shane Hersey’s Visualisation class proved to be very popular and has good numbers in it. We offered a number of courses, which did not go ahead due to lack of numbers.
I encourage all teachers to do some advertising to help bring in the students and keep their classes going or get them started. A short editorial with a photo to the Gazette works wonders – and it’s free.
Also, if you email me an updated class information sheet and materials list, I can put it on the website and have copies to hand out on enrolment days and at the markets.
If anyone has any ideas or contacts for possible new classes, or suggestions to improve our class numbers, please email me. I am open to suggestions and offers of help.
A big thank you to Vicki Hersey for helping to run enrolment days - much appreciated.
If someone would like to volunteer to put the enrolment day sign on the oval fence for next term, that would be great.
Term dates for this year are as follows:
Term 1 – Feb 4 – Feb 28. (Enrolment day Feb 2)
Term 2 – May 6 – June 28 (Enrolment day May 4)
Term 3 – July 22 – Sept 13 (Enrolment day July 20)
Term 4 – Oct 14 – Dec 6 (Enrolment day Oct 12)
Cheers,
Ingrid
Editor’s Report
The meetings in February (AGM and general) were productive and various other general business items such as a new cartridge for the photocopier and the possibility of buying a printer to save the ongoing high cost of the photocopier were discussed.
Also, in light of the treasurer’s report with the ongoing need to raise revenue, it was suggested that amongst the other budget measures, such as applying for Club grants for 2013, the main building should be advertised for meetings.
The committee was informed there were numerous class enquiries as a result of the last Glenbrook Stall day indicating the importance of having the stall. (Photos from the stall are shown at the end of the newsletter).
Wendy reminded us that due to Jan’s retirement we need a new exhibitions sub-committee to organise the exhibitions. Action: Helen, Wendy and Bronwyn will be the new sub-committee and will meet to organise the next exhibition.
The cleaning contract arrangements are to be clarified with details to be supplied to the committee for consideration and negotiation with the contractor
A reminder was issued, that the meeting room should be returned to its original state after each use, including taking down backdrops from the wall. Also, members should be mindful of community property so that items not in use currently but are intended to be used in the future do not get thrown out. An organised clean out of property will be conducted at the next council clean up.
The possibility of running children’s classes during school holidays will be discussed at next meeting. Wendy, Bronwyn and Helen have volunteered to run classes.
Farewell presents were given to Jan and Ned Needham. Richard thanked them on behalf of all of us for their long years of service to the Centre.

Hot Topics:
A possible name change from “Blue Mountains Creative Arts Centre” to “Glenbrook Creative Arts Centre” will be discussed. Any such change will of course need to go to a vote by all member first but a move for a vote is likely to happen at the next committee meeting on the 4th of April. Any members who wish to show support for or against this motion are strongly encouraged to come along and join in the discussion. If you have strong views regarding this change and can’t make the meeting, you may wish to contact one of the Committee members to have your view represented and considered at the meeting.
Advertisment of Gallery use as studio space will also be considered and discussed at the next meeting. It has been suggested that if this was to occur,
- A legal document be signed
- Bond paid
- Rent paid a month in advance
Other uses for the Gallery which were suggested were a reading room/weekly get together.
If you have support or objections or alternate options for these possibilities, the committee is interested in hearing from you either before or at the next meeting.
